SAQ Prompt: Analyze the economic and social impacts of the Silk Road on societies between 600 BCE and 1450 CE.

Questions:

  1. Identify one major product or technology exchanged along the Silk Road and briefly explain how it affected a society involved in this trade network.

One major technological advancement that was exchanged along the silk road was a development of camel saddles. This development greatly increased the load that camels could originally carry, therefore more goods could be exchanged along the silk road because of this increase in goods, and different forms of the saddle could allow riders to travel easier and faster. The camel saddle made trading along the silk road safer, more efficient, and more convenient then ever before.

  1. Explain one way the Silk Road facilitated cultural exchange between different regions, and provide an example of a cultural or religious idea that spread as a result.

One way in which the Silk Road facilitated cultural exchange was through the establishment of trading cities such as Smarkland. Trading cities like Kashgar and Samarkand were developed to exchange goods, however very quickly they developed into the center of cultural exchange where diverse religions including Christianity, Buddhism, Zoroastrianism, and Islam were diffused. Aside from goods, religion, art, traditions, and culture were all spread along the Silk Road and Asia.

  1. Describe one impact the Silk Road had on the development of cities along the trade routes, and explain how this development influenced local economies.

One way the Silk road impacted the development of cities along trade routes was the development of caravanserai. These developments were similar to a hotel, where traders could rest and prepare to continue their journey, however this led to more cultural exchange within the cities that the caravanserai were located in. Cities were economically and culturally changed by the caravanserai because of the diverse religions and exchange that was being introduced.
